Description

Elusive 1919-D Half Dollar, MS63
Rarest Series Issue in Gem Condition

1919-D 50C MS63 PCGS. CAC. The 1919-D Walking Liberty half dollar issue is one that is elusive even in the higher circulated grades, where it is in keen demand from series specialists, and Gem examples of the issue are the rarest overall in the collection. The last Gem PCGS example we offered, back in 2005, brought $103,500. The present silver-white Select Mint State example shows scattered gold accents and noticeable obverse softness through the central high points, although that is actually typical for the issue and does not completely define the grade. A few small ticks appear on the lower skirt lines, and the first 9 in the date is also a touch weak. As expected, the reverse center is also softly struck, even if a bit stronger than the obverse. Generous luster percolates throughout both sides nonetheless, and the surfaces are untouched and still quite appealing. Population: 55 in 63 (1 in 63+), 82 finer (10/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24PZ, PCGS# 6578)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
