Description

Gem 1921 Half Dollar
Rare at This Grade Level

1921 50C MS65 PCGS. All of the celebrated, low-mintage 1921-PDS Walking Liberty halves need no introduction to series specialists. For the uninitiated, we note that the 1921 Philadelphia half dollar, with 246,000 pieces struck, is the second-lowest mintage of the series behind the 1921-D, at 208,000 coins. It is the higher-mintage 1921-S, however, that is generally acknowledged as the absolute rarest overall, despite its 548,000-coin production figure. The 1921 in Gem condition is still rare and quite in demand, although not so elusive as the 1917-S Obverse, the 1919-D and 1919-S, or the other two 1921 issues at that grade level. This MS65 PCGS example shows the bold strike the issue is known for, with a split thumb and much head detail on Liberty. The surfaces are frosty, mostly silver-white with slight pinkish hues. A small dark spot appears near the reverse rim at the ME of AMERICA but few marks occur, consistent with the grade. Population: 53 in 65 (1 in 65+), 4 finer (11/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24R6, PCGS# 6583)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
