Description

High Grade 1923-S

1923-S MS 64 NGC. This is one of the nicer 1923-S Walkers that we have seen recently. It is an upper-end coin that is very close to grading MS 65, and we assume that a rectangular depression on Liberty's breast accounts for the lower grade. The strike is strong for this issue with solid definition on the hand and even some on the skirt lines. The head detail is also quite sharp on the obverse, and the eagle's feathers are well defined on the reverse. The coin is mostly brilliant, with light toning on the periphery and around the devices accentuating the relief of the design. Frosted mint luster with hints of satin provides the eye-appeal of this scarce, early Walker. A well made 1923-S that should be of interest to collectors of this long, interesting series. (NGC ID# 24R9, PCGS# 6586)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
