Danish Asiatic Company. Christian VII Piastre 1777 AU55 NGC, Kongsberg mint, KM-639.2, Dav-412, Salvesen-52, Hede-9, Schou-3. "ISLAN" variety. The third and final year of production for the greater Danish Asiatic Company Trade Piastre series, though this issue differentiates from the 1771 dated issues in it's minting location; Kongsberg (Norway) as opposed to Copenhagen. It is immensely rare for two (one of each date) of these famed Trade "Crowns" to sell from the same collection, a distinction in modern times reserved for only the Millenia, Kroisos, and now the Eternal collections, the previous two sales occurring in 2008. This issue carries the same global allure as the 1771 dated examples, still closely mimicking the Spanish Colonial "Pillar Dollar" for validation in the Asian trade routes, and still referred to as the "Greenland Dollar" by a host of admirers hoping to possibly one day acquire an example for their own collection. The present selection is clearly not as technically proficient as the Gem Mint State specimen from the previous lot, but it is still a lovely example, perhaps more appealing to some in that it appears to have spent some amount of time in circulation, whether that stint occurred in Asia as intended is impossible to say. This is a dream type for Scandinavian collectors, World Crown collectors, and Trade issue collectors; on auction day someone's dream will come true.
