German Colony. Wilhelm II gold Proof 10 Mark 1895-A PR66 NGC, Berlin mint, KM8, J-708, D&S-386, Fr-2. Mintage: 2,000 (for both Proof and Business Strikes). The smaller of the two gold issues produced for German New Guinea in 1895 following the success of the copper and silver emissions from 1894, all but the two smallest copper types featuring the Bird of Paradise, perhaps the island of New Guinea's most famous indigenous wildlife. Though the 20 Mark is the larger denomination of the colony's two gold issues, the 10 Mark is nearly equal in terms of overall rarity, desirability, and collectability. They are both juggernauts of World numismatics, each being among the most beautifully produced gold coins of all time. Suffice to say, the preservation on this premium Gem Proof specimen is more than suitable, even for a coin with such special engraving and superior strike quality. Only five NGC examples of this Proof issue, the current coin included, have reached or exceeded the PR66 threshold. Perhaps just as important though is the Eliasberg/Clapp pedigree, a badge of honor belonging to some of the finest World gold coins in existence. This selection will be the highest graded example of it's kind to ever sell with Heritage, we look forward to the potential excitement that could accompany this special piece come auction day.
