1836 1/2 C Original, B-1, R.5, PR64 Red and Brown NGC. Breen Die State I. Although different observers have wide ranging estimates of survival, we believe that about 50 of these 1836 original half cents survive. These early strikes and other later First Restrikes are from the same physical die pair. Attribution is based solely on the die state. Original strikes are from a perfect obverse die while restrikes have a buckled obverse that was also combined with a different reverse die to create Second Restrikes. Certain examples cataloged as Originals may be First Restrikes or vice-versa, while occasionally such pieces are misattributed as Second Restrikes. Those challenges further complicate a determination of rarity. Two decades ago, Richard T. Coleman, Jr. created a census of proof half cents, listing 49 entries for the Original strikes, and his work remains valuable today. This Choice proof is sharply detailed with full stars on the obverse and strong leaf details on the reverse. The surfaces retain substantial faded orange mint color with splashes of lilac and blue toning. Dark spots between star 1 and the border, and below star 12, will identify this example. The reverse has many small spots inside the wreath that will confirm the identity. This is one of just four 1836 half cents that NGC has certified as Red and Brown (12/25), including two Originals (both PR64RB), one First Restrike (PR66RB), and one Second Restrike (PR65RB).(
