1856 1C MS63 PCGS. CAC. Snow-9. The 1856 is the first and rarest date in the small cent series, and a collector favorite since its issue. The present Choice example resides in a Generation 1.2 "rattler" holder from the late 1980s, an era when 1856 Flying Eagle cents were designated as Mint State unless they had mirrored fields. But this near-Gem is from Snow-9 dies, a die marriage now associated with circa-1859 proof restrikes. The coin shows satiny fields and medium tan-gold toning, though the initial butter-gold color lingers in design recesses. A sharp obverse strike displays full feathering on the eagle. A short die gouge extends from the left ribbon end, confirming its Snow-9 status. As the CAC endorsement suggests, eye appeal is strong and there are no notable distractions. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett.
