1901-S 25C XF40 CACG. The Barber quarter series is replete with condition rarities, though none so much as the three big key dates. Indeed, this is a series where the traditional key dates are as challenging to acquire in high grade as their status would suggest. The rarest of the three keys is the 1901-S. Its mintage (72,664 coins) was the second lowest in the series, but its high-grade survivorship is the smallest. Rarely is an example seen above VF, and such coins, when found, are more likely to be in a low-end Mint State grade than in the highly desired XF or AU grades. A pleasing XF 1901-S quarter is one of the rarest Barber coins a collector can seek.
The current piece boasts problem-free, natural surfaces with remnants of luster in the fields and strong detail throughout the devices. Hints of russet and light blue-green toning adorn each side, and there are no mentionable marks. The quality-conscious collector will have found, in the present coin, the ideal 1901-S quarter. PCGS and NGC combined have certified five examples in XF40, just one of which is CAC-stickered. This coin is the only CACG-slabbed example for the grade. CAC reports seven finer stickered coins and two finer slabbed pieces (1/26).(
