1917 25C Type One MS67+ Full Head PCGS. CAC. While it is true that the 1917 Philadelphia issue is the most plentiful of the Type One Standing Liberty quarters in high grade, no example has yet achieved the MS68 Full Head distinction at PCGS or NGC (2/26). MS67 Full Head coins appear with regularity, but advanced collectors much compete for a small number of MS67+ Full Head pieces, particularly those with CAC endorsement -- these are the finest 1917 Type One coins known. PCGS reports 25 MS67+ Full Head pieces, and NGC lists 11 plus a lone MS67+★ Full Head. However, these top-grade coins are much rarer on the auction scene than even those numbers might suggest. We have previously handled an MS67+ Full Head coin on just eight occasions. Of those, three represented a single NGC coin making multiple appearances. The other five were PCGS pieces, but only two of those PCGS coins were CAC endorsed. The first of those two appeared in our January 2016 FUN Signature, where it realized $32,900, and the second appeared in our August 2021 ANA Signature, where it realized $27,600.

The current Plus-graded, CAC-approved Registry coin is a third MS67+ Full Head PCGS CAC specimen, ranking it among the finest 1917 Type Ones known. Beautifully luminous and radiant luster adorns each side, cast in captivating iridescence that allows the original silver surfaces to shine through. The coin boasts a legitimately full strike and luster that suggests an early die state. There are no distractions, either in toning or abrasion, and the resulting eye appeal is stunning. There are more than 8,500 1917 Type One Full Head coins reported at PCGS. We expect, if all were lined up as options, most collectors would pick this piece. It is just that attractive and pristine.(Registry values: N2998)
