British Colony. George II gold Counterstamped Pistole (1 Pound 5 Shillings) ND (1758) XF45 NGC, KM10.2, Prid-2 (this coin), Gordon-2c. Floriate "GR" within circular indent Counterstamp (AU Strong) on Colombia 2 Escudos 1758 PN-J [counterstamp on either face]. Incredible opportunity to acquire this rare Pistole counterstamped type, only the second time we've handled an example at our firm. Linked to the Act of 18 November 1757, which required gold and silver coins to be countermarked to be made legal tender at a fixed value. Much more detail visible on counterstamp than the other example we handled in 2014, that being the only other NGC-certified piece and coming in at a substantially lower VF20. We do note that the description in the Byrne catalog gives an ex Murdoch-Caldecott pedigree for the present piece, but this would appear to be unsubstantiated. Nonetheless, our specimen's desirability speaks for itself to its interested community.
Ex. Edward Roehrs Collection (Noonans Auction, November 2011, Lot 383); Ray Byrne Collection (Jess Peters Auction, June 1975, Lot 798); Glendinging's Auction (May 1961, Lot 125)
