George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR64 Cameo NGC, KM702, S-3797, L&S-27, W&R-213 (R3), Fr-373. Lettered edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Mintage: 150. The ultimate chase coin from George IV's decade-long reign and a candidate for the most desirable gold piece in all of British numismatics. Another masterpiece from the workshop of William Wyon, though as some commentators have suggested, the great engraver clearly took liberties in his portrait of George IV, obfuscating the King's increasingly paunchy body type. For this cataloger, the real beauty lies on Merlen's reverse, where an ornate royal mantle drapes seamlessly and symmetrically across the planchet, seeming almost lifelike in its curvature and composition. Fully struck with mirrored fields that warrant the Cameo designation, this is destined to be housed in a cabinet worthy of its pedigree.
