Spanish Colony. Ferdinand VII Octavo 1829 M-F MS61 Brown PCGS, Manila mint, KM8, Cal-81, Basso-Unl. The most elusive of the three dates that saw production from this diminutive copper series, which was unique to the reign of Ferdinand VII. Examples of this type found at auction are predominantly from the 1820 issue; in fact, Heritage has only offered 1820 Octavos, never an 1829 or 1830, until now. For the first occurrence of this date to sell with our firm to be a Mint State specimen is extraordinary. The 1829 issue is scarce and desirable in all grades, but we are unaware of a specimen of this caliber appearing for auction in recent history. This piece is clearly of Mint State quality, exhibiting no rub to the design high points and a remnant or two of pinkish luster in the protected areas; perhaps limited in its numerical assignment by a few darker spots on the obverse. We are certain that Spanish Philippines copper specialists will be thrilled by this selection.
