Peter I gold 2 Roubles 1720 MS63+ NGC, Moscow mint, KM158.2, Fr-91, Bitkin-102 (R). Divided Date. САМОДЕРЖЕЦЪ legend variety. An historic gold series struck under Peter the Great, featuring an incredible number of bust and legend varieties throughout the production run from 1718 to 1725. This Choice Mint-State specimen from 1720 is, simply put, an incredible example of the type. The present bust variety is particularly handsome, especially with such even rendering of the portrait details and having encountered no discernable wear. Each side of the coin is wonderfully centered but the true magic of this example lies in the sublime state of its surfaces. Mint-imbued satin brilliance gently fills the entirety of the flan, which is accompanied by natural burnt amber toning that has occupied much of the peripheries over time. Though Mint State representatives of this series are occasionally available on the market, the gravity of the series and the attraction of such historic pieces in beautiful preservation makes each appearance, such as this, vitally important in Russian collecting communities.
