Nicholas I platinum 12 Roubles 1835-CПБ MS61 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C179, Bitkin-44 (3), Fr-158. Mintage: 127. All platinum issues appeared during the reign of Nicholas I; the regulation coinage began in 1828 with 3 Rouble coins, the 6 Rouble coming in 1829 and the 12 Roubles added one year later in 1830. Minting in this metal continued until 1845 when an imperial ukase ordered complete cessation of platinum coinage and a total recall of existing coinage in circulation within a 6 month period, due in part to their unpopularity with the public. These mystically rare and fantastically large 12 Roubles were struck each year from 1830 to 1845, but the quantities produced of each date were always in small numbers. The highest mintage figure for the entire series was 1,463 in 1831, but most dates originated from totals similar to the 127 figure for the present date, or even less. Though not the most pristinely preserved example of this type we've ever offered, exhibiting signs of mild handling throughout, encountering a 12 Rouble representative in problem free Mint State condition is an occasion worth celebrating. Not since 2013 has an dated 1835 specimen graced Heritage's auction block, a streak we are happy to see come to end when this beauty sells on auction day to a most worthy collector.
