Republic 4 Reales 1841 QUITO-MV MS64 NGC, Quito mint, KM24a (this coin), Carr-54 (same). Lettered Edge. Three Arrows, Three Shafts variety. 0.8924 fineness. 15.37gm. An undisputable trophy from Ecuadorian numismatics and the lone example in this unique fineness/weight combination yet seen, even eluding the Museo Numismático del Ecuador's impressive collection. This early and crude-by-nature type impresses the eye when twisted at hand, embellished by glassy, Prooflike fields that shimmer under the deep cabinet-tone. The connoisseurs of Ecuadorian coins knows how scarce these Quito issues are, but to find one fully struck on a mirrored planchette as such, is truly remarkable. Unsurprisingly, it is the plate coin for two of the references we have consulted, and seemingly unique in this weight and metal fineness combination, noted by a previous cataloger at 0.8924 fineness with a weight of 15.37gm. and marking this a significant and possible trial example. We had the pleasure of offering an MS65 example of the standard type from the D. Moore collection (Heritage Auction 3051, January 2017, lot 32068), which fetched $8,225 and stands as the single piece graded higher than this offering. Additionally, the present offering reveals more attractive and better struck surfaces than the aforementioned D. Moore specimen. That piece was the far-more common variety: 3 arrows/2 shafts while ours, of the 3 arrows/3 shafts variety, is priced 10 times higher in Krause. This representative embodies everything collectors desire in a single coin: type scarcity, variety rarity, conditional superiority, and arguably a presentation-strike nature, making this the perfect acquisition for any Ecuador collector or world trophy-coin hunter.
