(1663-72) St. Patrick Farthing, Silver, M. 1c.18-Ba.17, AU50 PCGS. Ex: Norweb. 99.8 grains. The majority of Mark Newby's St. Patrick pieces known today are small diameter copper coins that are typical called farthings, while the larger diameter pieces are described as halfpennies. A few silver examples like this one are sometimes labeled silver farthings, although in the Norweb catalog they were called shillings. The Norweb cataloger called the controversial gold example a guinea.
Although lightly worn on the design high points, this pleasing silver version of the St. Patrick farthing exhibits lustrous light gray surfaces with splashes of gold toning. The surfaces are free of significant marks. Listed on page 11 of the 2026 Guide Book. Population for all silver varieties: 2 in 50, 10 finer (12/25).
Ex: Purchased from Spink & Son via private treaty (8/24/1960); Norweb Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 2385; Jon Hanson; Donald G. Partrick/Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2021), lot 3005.
