1908 $5 MS66 PCGS. Bela Lyon Pratt's famous Indian design, with the devices sunken below the fields, was introduced to mixed reviews in 1908. Criticism included a concern from nervous citizens that the design could trap germs in the crevices, leading to severe illness. We doubt that anyone actually became ill from handling these coins. Today, of course, the Indian quarter eagles and half eagles are highly popular with collectors. The present Premium Gem is an exceptional first-year example that nearly reaches the top of the population charts. PCGS has handled just three numerically finer examples and NGC has seen four. This lovely example has bold design definition and brilliant straw-gold luster. Population: 34 in 66 (4 in 66+), 3 finer (10/25).(Registry values: N7079)
