1880 TOKEN Wailuku Plantation Half Real Fine 12 PCGS. M. 2TE-7. Spanish-American silver was the prevalent money in Hawaii prior to the 1883 official coinage. A Spanish half real was equivalent to 6 1/4 U.S. cents. The 19th century Wailuku Plantation tokens were struck by a local blacksmith and were paid to workers on the sugar cane farm. Survivors are rare, and typically in circulated grades. This example has sharp legends, and the denomination side display separated dentils. The predominantly walnut-brown surfaces lack detrimental marks, and display forest-green patina in design recesses. Listed on page 431 of the 2020 Guide Book. From The Poulos Family Collection, Part II.
