Seldom seen in any grade higher than VF or XF, due not only to its small mintage of 9,000 pieces, but also because so many San Francisco-issue coins of this era saw heavy duty in circulation. This piece shows about half of its original mint luster over light honey-gold surfaces which have light abrasions on both sides, none too distracting. The diagnostic die lapping has removed much of the scroll that bears the motto. Census: 7 in 50, 20 finer (3/06).

1662 Oak Tree Twopence VF20 PCGS. Small 2. Breen-35. Noe-30. 11.8 grains. Although the Oak Tree twopence pieces dated 1652 are believed to be 19th century forgeries, this original 1662 piece traces its origin back to the 1660 contract between the Generall Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the coiner John Hull. Both sides display incomplete borders and peripheral design elements that are likely the combined result of an imperfect strike causing the planchet to buckle, and subsequent uneven wear. The visible details, however, retain more than adequate definition of the major features to offset these weaker areas. Indeed, overall this piece is quite sharp for the grade. Undated SHILNG (1658-1659) Lord Baltimore Shilling XF40 PCGS. Breen-64. Hodder 1-A. A partly lustrous light silver-gray example with moderate waviness to the planchet. There are a couple of ancient hairline scratches on the obverse that are not a particular distraction. The centering is excellent. Clash marks of denticles are present beneath the II, as usually encountered on survivors of this rare issue. The Lord Baltimore Shilling was struck at the Tower Mint in London circa 1659, under the authority of the second Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert (1606-1675). The pieces were eventually exported to the Maryland colony, where they were expected to remain since they were underweight. However, they had largely disappeared from circulation by 1700, unlike the contemporary Massachusetts pieces struck locally in greater quantity. Listed on page 38 of the 2006 Guide Book.

1818 1/2RL New Spain (Texas) Jola Half Real, Large Planchet XF40 NGC. Breen-1081. These Spanish Texas coins were produced in what is now San Antonio on the order of Lt. Col. Manuel Prado. Prado authorized that some 8,000 coins should be struck in March of 1817. None of these pieces are known today. If any should turn up they would have the 1817 date as well as the initials of Manuel Barrera. The few coins that are known bear the 1818 date and the initials of Jose Antonio de la Garza (JAG). The denomination (1/2) is sideways between JAG and the date, and the reverse has what may be the first appearance of the Lone Star to represent Texas.

Very few jolas are known, probably fewer than 100 in all grades, most of which came from a hoard of about 60 pieces discovered on the banks of the San Antonio River in 1959. Almost all of the known examples show some degree of corrosion from having been buried for 150 years. This is a well centered coin with even brown patina and moderately corroded surfaces. The only striking deficiency is weakness on the second 8 in the date. The Texas jola is an issue that, if we can borrow a term from the music industry, has crossover potential. It appeals to U.S. colonial coin collectors, collectors of Mexican numismatics, or Spanish colonial issues, as well Texas numismatists no matter what their numismatic specialty. A rare opportunity to acquire this important colonial coin. Listed on page 74 of the 2006 Guide Book.

1792 1C Washington Getz Pattern Cent, Small Eagle, Copper Fine 12 PCGS. Baker-25. Although never adopted as an official coinage design, these popular patterns, as designed by Pennsylvanian Peter Getz, feature a classic portrait of our first president. They were minted in Harper's coachhouse on 6th Street in Philadelphia, a historic location also used for the striking of the 1792 half dismes. This example either circulated or was carried as a pocket piece for many years. An old, rather prominent obverse scratch angles across the cheek and lower lip into the field at left. This is the "second die" as outlined by Walter Breen, and it is the more plentiful of two varieties, being attributable by the placement of the 1 in 1789 (actually a capital I was used in place of a digit) below the right base of the T. While moderately worn, this example boasts a conspicuous absence of problems and shows only the normal weakness at the center of the reverse. Listed on page 78 of the 2006 Guide Book.

1796 1/2 C With Pole Good 4 ANACS. C-2, B-2a, High R.5. This coin is a survivor from an original mintage of only 1,390 pieces. The 1796 has long been regarded as the key issue in the U.S. half cent series, and examples of both the No Pole and With Pole varieties are difficult to locate in any grade. This coin has some problems--the surfaces are dark, and the texture is rough with scattered pitting. Still, most of the focal features are evident, and the date is well defined. An important opportunity for the early copper specialist. EAC 4.

1831 1/2 C --Impaired Proof, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Original. B-1, C-1, High R.6. In his Half Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen listed 21 different circulation strike examples along with nine proofs. We believe that these 30 citations represent about 25 different coins. For many years, the 1831 half cent was considered to be a proof-only issue. Today, however, the consensus of opinion suggests that a small quantity were produced with the intention of entering circulation. Proofs were also coined, including two different restrikes produced in the 1850s or possibly later. This example has pleasing medium reddish-brown and olive coloration. The surfaces are typical of a lightly circulated half cent from this era, having some minor imperfections. If you have been searching for an example of this issue for your collection, the present sale provides a remarkable bidding opportunity. EAC 12.

Having filled its vaults with coins from previous years, the Philadelphia Mint refrained from producing business strike Half Cents in 1836. The facility did, however, strike an unknown, although presumably limited number of proofs this year. The reflective fields display deep golden-brown, mauve, and steel-blue colors when they are tilted beneath a light. An exquisitely struck specimen with attractive surfaces and only the faintest hairlines in the fields. Census: 2 in 62, 7 finer (3/06). EAC PR60.
