Description
Original "1797" Sansom Medal in Bronze
MS63 Brown, Baker-71A
1797 Sansom Medal, Original Dies MS63 Brown NGC. Baker-71A,
R.6. Julian-PR-1. Bronze. Plain Edge. 40.7 mm. Designed by John
Reich and issued in 1807 in Philadelphia in very limited
quantities. The original advertisement for this medal states it was
only issued in silver, but that is clearly not the case as original
pieces are also known in bronze and white metal. Originals are
distinguished by recutting on the 9 in the date and also from the
closeness of RELINQ. to the pedestal. The Rulau-Fuld revision of
Baker (second edition) estimates 12-15 pieces are known of the
Baker-71A. This is an attractive example with slight variation in
the overall mahogany-brown color, and there are just a few tiny
contact marks in the fields that account for the grade.
