Description

Lustrous Gem 1865 Gold Dollar

1865 G$1 MS66 NGC. Like the 1864 from this collection, the 1865 may also be from the Bareford Collection. Lot 48 in that sale was described with "a miniscule planchet defect near the first L of DOLLAR," and this example appears to have just such a defect, although it might be a clash mark from Liberty's ear. A small planchet defect is also visible near U in UNITED. Both sides of this example exhibit strong clash marks, especially the obverse. This example, a splendid Premium Gem, has brilliant rose-gold luster with frosty devices and reflective fields. Few finer examples of this date have been certified. Census: 4 in 66, 2 finer (7/06).
