Extraordinary MS66 1868 Half Dime

1868 H10C MS66 PCGS. CAC. After the start of the Civil War, half dimes circulated in the West, but rarely east of the Mississippi River; many were eventually melted. While the half dime was produced concurrently with Shield nickels starting in 1866, the nickel survived the coinage changes of the Mint Act of 1873, but the half dime did not. This well struck half dime is one of nine coins certified MS66 at both services combined, with only eight finer. The coin has clean, silver-gray surfaces that display a hint of sepia toning. Population: 5 in 66, 2 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 234N, PCGS# 4392, Greysheet# 3796)

Weight: 1.24 grams
