1794 S-23 Head of 1794 Cent, XF45+
Tied for Third Finest Known

1794 1C S-23 R4+ Head of 1794 XF45+ PCGS. Frosty medium brown with four puffs of reddish brown toning on the obverse. Each of the reddish areas contains a microscopic speck of shallow verdigris but the rest of the planchet is smooth. The reverse is quite attractive, nearly flawless. The only contact marks are a very light rim bruise under the 9 and a couple tiny ticks under the bust. LDS, Breen state V, Heck 5, with all the obverse die cracks and clashmarks described by both authors. The obverse is clearly bisected by a rather strong crack that has created a shelf in the field before the neck; the plain of the field under the chin is higher than the plain around the pole. The obverse die clearly was split and overdue for retirement. Graded VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #21509. Bland says VF35 and tied for CC#3. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VF35. One of the finer pieces is impounded in the ANS Collection, so there is only one superior S-23 cent available to collectors (the Daniel Holmes example, Goldbergs held in association with McCawley & Grellman Auctions 9/6/2009:38, that brought $106,375). The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35534.45+/35503082).

The Jack H. Robinson Collection of United States half cents and large cents, sold by Superior Galleries on January 29-30, 1989, was one of the most important copper auctions of the late 20th century. Formed over three decades with an emphasis on rarity, die varieties, and above all, eye appeal, the collection contained over 200 half cents and more than 400 early large cents, along with extraordinary depth in Middle and Late Date varieties. Highlights among the half cents included a virtually complete run of major varieties from 1793 through 1857, such as the 1796 With Pole, the Ruby 1802 C-1, the 1804 C-2 and C-7, and the 1831 Original, with multiple rare die states and Mint errors also represented. The large cent section began with superb 1793s (S-14, S-15, and others) and the most significant group of 1794s ever sold at auction, encompassing all Sheldon varieties, numerous Condition Census examples, and the legendary 1794 Starred Reverse (S-48).

The collection's strength continued through the turn of the century, offering rare and high-grade 1795-1799 cents, including the 1795 Reeded Edge (S-79), the Jefferson Head (S-80), and choice 1799 S-188 and S-189 pieces. Robinson's holdings of Middle Date cents were almost unmatched, with 240 of the 244 recognized Newcomb varieties, extensive die state studies, and multiple Condition Census coins such as the 1818 N-4, 1827 N-12, and 1831 N-8. His Late Date collection was about 95% complete, with discoveries like the 1846 N-23 and 1848 N-36, the Floyd Starr "1848" Small Date, and several proofs of the 1850s. Superior described the Robinson Collection as the most significant copper cabinet sold since the fabled Robinson S. Brown, Jr. Collection, and the hardbound catalog-with photographs and new pedigree data-was intended as a major reference for collectors and researchers.
