Extremely Rare 1927-S Full Head Quarter, MS66, The Key To The Regular Issue Standing Liberty Quarter Series
1927-S 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. Through 1926, prices on the New York Stock Exchange rose in response to legitimate profit within the United States' economy. However, from 1927 until the crash of 1929, prices soared on pure speculation. But this was not the only harbinger of Black Tuesday that would stop the American economy in its tracks two years later on October 29, 1929. By 1927, residential construction and automobile production nearly matched consumer demand--the time when companies would be forced to downsize was clearly in sight. The shrinking economy also manifested itself in 1927's depressed mintages for branch mint Standing Liberty quarter deliveries. Only 396,000 quarters were struck in the San Francisco mint, and while the 1916 has a much lower output, many more of that date were set aside as first year of issue mementoes. By 1927, though, the novelty of Hermon MacNeil's design was long gone and few people on the West Coast thought of setting aside quarters from that year. The 1927-S is also a major strike rarity with estimates of only 1 to 3% of the mintage originally struck with complete detail on the head of Liberty, placing the '27-S on the same rarity plane as the 1918/7-S overdate with Full Head definition. While the main store of this coin's value lies in the full definition on Liberty's head, the surfaces are equally impressive in their overall preservation. The mint luster is soft, frosted, and generally untoned with a few specks and dashes of original coloration on each side. An unquestionably original and nearly perfectly preserved example of this important 20th century rarity, this is one of only two pieces so graded by PCGS with none finer (11/03).
