The May 1914 S.H. Chapman sale of the William F. Gable Collection was one of the most celebrated U.S. coin auctions of the early 20th century, distinguished by its completeness and the exceptional quality of the material. Gable's cabinet, built primarily between 1890 and 1901, included a near-complete series of U.S. copper coinage, with particular strength in the early large cents. The 1793 issues-Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap cents-were all present in choice examples, and the run of 1794s included Condition Census pieces and rare die marriages that had been carefully selected for sharp strikes and superior surfaces. Draped Bust cents of the late 1790s, highlighted by notable 1796 and 1797 varieties, along with key rarities such as the 1799 and 1804 cents, stood out for their unusually high preservation for the time.

The sale further emphasized overdate varieties, rare die states, and notable pedigrees, underscoring Chapman's reputation for meticulous cataloguing. Half cents also figured prominently, with important 1793 and 1794 issues, including pieces struck over Talbot, Allum & Lee undertypes, and elusive early 19th-century dates in strong grades. Together, these early American coppers formed a cornerstone of the auction, situating the Gable Collection as both a collector's achievement and a scholarly resource. With 14 photographic plates and Chapman's detailed descriptions, the catalog ensured its lasting reputation as a standard reference, while the early copper portion in particular confirmed Gable's cabinet as one of the premier assemblages of its era.
