Description
1829 N-9 Cent, Near-Mint
Condition Census Quality
Ex: Naftzger, Medium Letters
1829 1C Medium Letters AU58 PCGS. N-9, R.4. Our EAC Grade
AU50. Ex: Naftzger Collection. The middle die state with cracks
from the portrait to stars 4 and 12 but no crack through the first
three stars. Toned medium to deep brown with a typical strike and a
hint of olive-brown friction on the cheek. A loupe reveals only
trivial contact on the obverse field, a subtle golden-brown spot
near star 6, and an unobtrusive mahogany-red spot below star 8.
Noyes grades this piece XF40 with the sharpness of AU55, and tied
with one other coin for the third spot in his census. We agree with
Grellman's grade of AU50 in the Naftzger catalog, and feel that it
may rank even higher in the condition census.Ex: George Ramont, 4/1976; Myles Z. Gerson (2/1978); R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 2/2009), lot 230.
