SICILY. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II (275-215 BC). AR 16 litrae (27mm, 13.47 gm, 5h). Struck ca. 240-218/5 BC. Diademed and veiled head left; cup with handles to right / BAΣIΛIΣΣAΣ ΦIΛIΣTIΔOΣ, Nike, holding reins in both hands, driving fast quadriga right; E to lower right. CCO 15 (D1/R1). HGC 2, 1554. Struck from the very first pair of dies in this long series, and decidedly rare thus. Beautifully toned. Extremely Fine.Auction Info
