1793 S-14, B-17 Liberty Cap Cent, VF Details
Famous Bisecting Crack Variety

1793 1C Liberty Cap -- Tooled -- NGC Details. VF. S-14, B-17, Low R.5. Our EAC Grade VG7. Ex: Mervis Collection. Both sides of this cent display deep steel toning with lighter brown on the high points. The surfaces are moderately corroded, with evidence of tooling to smooth them out. The strike is nicely centered with full border beads and a wide outer margin on the reverse. The only known die state has a heavy vertical die crack that bisects the obverse from the E in LIBERTY to the 3 in the date. Faint clashmarks are evident at Liberty's throat on the obverse of this cent. The Bisecting Crack is a famous 1793 large cent variety that was discovered in the late 1850s by Montroville Dickeson who described it in his 1859 American Numismatical Manual. He was born in Italy in 1817 and died in Colorado in 1879, living much of his life in Alexandria, Virginia.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.
