Description

1794 S-56, B-48 Cent, AU55
Bland's Third Finest Known

1794 1C Head of 1794 AU55 NGC. S-56, B-48, R.3. Our EAC Grade XF45. Ex: Mervis Collection. Breen Die State II. Both sides have heavy clash marks with clear repunching visible on the A in STATES. Del Bland grades this lovely cent AU50 and third finest in his census. The sharpness is close to Mint State, and the olive and golden-brown surfaces host trivial marks of no consequence. The reverse has a few widely scattered corrosion spots.

This is the Breen Die State III plate coin, although it is clearly from die state II. Photos for the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia came from a variety of sources, but most came from the Bowers and Merena photo files. That was back in the days of film cameras, and every photo published in a catalog was preserved in the files. Several months were spent reviewing all of those photos, and images were selected that would best illustrate the die states in the book, realizing that slight loss of detail sometimes occurred during the printing process. For that reason, situations like the present occur where the die state of the coin does not match the die state where the coin is plated. Some catalogers have alluded to "mistakes" made by the editor of that reference without giving thought to the reasons behind those choices.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (9/1996), lot 25; W.M. Wadlington (6/30/2005); Dan Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 9/2009), lot 90; Greg Hannigan.

From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.
