Gold Medal on the Marriage of Tsarevitch Alexei and Princess Charlotta, October 25, 1711, Conjoined busts right/Clasped hands above altar, Diakov 41.1, Reichel 1150 (AR) (R3), unlisted in Smirnov, 69.68 gm, 48 mm, XF details with light scrapes on the reverse and one noticeable rim bump. There are two large cuds (areas of excess metal), as made, also on the reverse. An extremely rare early 18th Century gold medal, and we can find no record of sales, or offerings, of this type in gold.

Alexei was born in Moscow, the son of Tsar Peter I, and was raised by his mother. The relations between Alexei and his father were severely strained by the hatred between his mother and father. Eventually, Peter I removed the mother, placed her in a convent, and Alexei was raised by educated foreigners. In 1711 Alexei was married to Princess Charlotta of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, much to his dismay. The marriage was a failure from the start. Charlotta died in 1715, an unhappy Alexei fled the country, only to be forced back to Russia and die by torture at the hands of his father.
