The Finest Seen Caracas 1 Real of 1818

Ferdinand VII 1 Real 1818-BS, Caracas mint, KM 5.1, Stohr-10-C5, AU55 NGC. Very little actual wear and beautiful steel tone over the surfaces, with multicolored hues evident on the cross side. An absolutely stunning condition for this rare coin. Despite being the only available date of this type (at 13,800 pieces, its mintage is the highest of the series) the 1818 1 Real remains a true rarity in its own right when in presentable condition, since almost all examples (say, 80%) come holed: the ex Rosenman Krause plate coin and the ex-Huntington piece (Morton and Eden 3/2013, lot 550) are typical examples. The fact that these pieces are, as mentioned in the previous lot, of only 0.750 fineness does not help either, with wear usually coupled with a dull toning. This is the finest specimen the cataloguer recalls seeing (together with the Salbach piece sold by Jacques Schulman in 1911). It might well be the finest extant in private hands, and is comparable to the nicer piece in the ANS collection. Truly a unique opportunity for the Venezuelan specialist, or at least one that will not repeat itself for many years.
