Description

Token Assortment of 11 Items 1864 -1968, Palm tree token dated 1864 from "Yngenio Ecuador" and "Vale por Un Real" is among the earlier dated good-style tokens of Latin America; its attribution is shown as uncertain by Dana. This 19mm brass is essentially lustrous mint state and cost Dana $30 three decades ago. Two atypical large issues are a Rafael Alvarez copper One Dollar from Santa Ana and a 38mm 27-gram plated 50 Sucres from Chalet Suisse opened in 1968 in Quito. Jose Gabriel Pena of Guayaquil may have issued a 38mm CuNi token for his HACIENDA GUAYABO nearly a century ago ( it indicates the year of 1917 which is the year when the Philadelphia mint made its first production of CuNi coinage for Ecuador). This specimen appears to be a sample which was then rejected as its "mint state" was modified by a grinder removing some reverse legends while leaving the remainder choice. A heavily-worn regulation 2 Centavos of 1909 has some hacienda script A counterstamp incused on both sides; some 25 years ago neither Dana nor the experts Dale Seppa and Michael Anderson could attribute it. The Eklund 1163 German silver 1/4 Real Guayaquil token, likely produced by Scovill, is presented with and without hole. Three other issues indicate Guayaquil including a handsome 30mm nearly-mint-state aluminum ice-token valued at 20 Centavos, a pre-World War One vulcanite 5 Centavos with the Ecuadorian National Arms (this obtained from Paul Bosco 25 years ago for $35), and an ex-Howard Gibbs brass 1/8 Real of Santiago Letechi in a very-old original envelope. Final piece is a brilliant mint-state Guayaquil cigarette brass Hernandez token. Quality overall should be typical but attributions are tentative. Sold as is, NO Return.
