Description
Mint State 1853 Assay Office Twenty
900 Thous., K-18
1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. MS61 NGC.
K-18, R.2. Luster dominates the legends, devices, and scrollwork on
the present Uncirculated pioneer gold piece. The strike is crisp
throughout aside from moderate incompleteness on the claw and
arrows above the shield. Most Assay Office examples are notably
abraded from their duty performed in Gold Rush commerce, but the
present example is uncommonly devoid of marks. A splendid
representative from the waning days of the U.S. Assay Office of
Gold, which closed its doors in 1853 in anticipation of the opening
of the San Francisco Mint the following year. Listed on page 367 of
the 2010 Guide Book.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# ANHD, PCGS# 10013, Greysheet# 11696)
