Description

Splendid 1908-O Half, MS65

1908-O 50C MS65 PCGS. CAC. With a mintage of 5.36 million coins, this issue has nearly double the mintage of the 1907-O, the second highest New Orleans production in the Barber half dollar series. In fact, only the 1899, with a mintage of 5.5 million coins, has a higher mintage among all 74 Barber issues. The high mintage leads collectors to believe that Gem examples are easily obtained. In fact, there is no Barber half dollar issue that is easily obtained in Gem or finer grades.
Dale Friend chose this lovely Gem to represent the 08-O in his collection because of its remarkable aesthetic appeal. Both sides have frosty luster with champagne toning and a frame of gold, blue, and lilac. Slight weakness is evident as usual just right of the shield. Population: 29 in 65, 28 finer (10/08).
Ex: Larry Whitlow.
