Description

Brandenburg-Ansbach. Christiane Charlotte, as Regent gold Ducat 1726 MS63 NGC, Schwabach mint, KM157, Fr-340, Grüber-4397. Mintmaster: Johann Jakob Ebenauer; Dies by Georg Wilhelm Vestner. Christiane Charlotte (of Wurttemberg-Winnental) ruled as (regent) margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach during her son Karl Wilhelm Friedrich's minority, from 1723 to 1729. A wonderful companion piece to the 1727 Taler (or the 1/2 Taler also from 1726) in this sale that also features the seldom encountered portrait of Christiane Charlotte. Though of a much smaller format than the Taler piece, this offering has the benefit of being struck in gold, and the brilliant nature of the metal is in full display on this Choice Mint State specimen. Of the three problem-free representatives of this issue appearing on the NGC census, this is the finest specimen, a fitting achievement for a coin belonging to the great Clapp/Eliasberg pedigree.

Ex. Eliasberg Collection (Spink | Stack's, April 2005, Lot 251); John H. Clapp Collection (Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942)
