Description

Red and Brown Gem Thick Planchet
London Elephant Token, W-12040

(1694) TOKEN London Elephant Token, Thick Planchet MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. Hodder 2-B, W-12040, R.2. Elephant tokens with any remaining mint red are great rarities. PCGS has certified only five such pieces. PCGS and NGC combined have graded more than 200 examples as Brown, but among those only a single NGC coin attained the MS65 grade. The present Gem retains the initial orange-gold along device outlines and within the legends. Carbon is microscopic and there are no abrasions. The strike is consistent across the pachyderm and shield. Though the London Elephant tokens are an English issue, they are die linked to the very rare Carolina and New England varieties. Listed on page 46 of the 2013 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 65 Red and Brown, 1 finer (10/12).
Ex: Chicago ANA (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 6448.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 56, Greysheet# 354)
