Description

Flashy Near-Choice Bavarian 5 Ducats

Bavaria. Maximilian I gold 5 Ducats 1640 MS62 NGC, Munich mint, KM269, Fr-196. 17.33gm. Type with date divided by city view. An immensely attractive example of this scarce single-year type, and one that is seldom seen in anything remotely comparable in both the aesthetic allure and technical preservation. Both obverse and reverse designs are practically as-struck, revealing impressive depth and design when considering its contemporaries. Mellowed golden expanses showcase an abundance of mint flash and die polish, and while precluded from a finer assignment by a handful of contact marks and wisps, this does little to detract from the piece's overall appeal. With so few decidedly Mint State offerings coming to market every decade, we anticipate fervent interest for the lot at hand when crossing the auction block.
