Stunning Choice Mint State Graz 5 Ducat

Leopold I gold 5 Ducat 1669-IGW MS64 NGC, Graz mint, KM-Unl., Fr-314, Köhler-Unl., Horsky-Unl., MzA-168, Herinek-92, CNA-28-b-3. 17.03gm. Johann Georg Weiss as mintmaster. Struck from Taler dies (cf. KM1175). A coin which can only be regarded as absolutely exquisite in every sense and fully deserving of its virtually Gem Mint State certification. In fact, a star designation would hardly be out of place, given the specimen's unmistakably glassy surface luster, which washes evenly over the planchet, revealing hardly the least trace of waviness or bending. Fine die polish can be observed with particular prominence over the reverse, a micro-fine stippling texturing Leopold's mantle and reinforcing the recesses between the locks of his hair. While a number of examples of this type have appeared at auction in recent decades, none even approach this piece in terms of technical fineness and preservation, and indeed the present offering remains the sole representative yet certified. Notable as a type missing from both the Horsky and Paramount collections, and of the utmost desirability to even the most advanced collectors of Austrian coinage.
