Description

Excellent Ultra Cameo Proof 5 Pounds

George VI gold Proof 5 Pounds 1937 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM861, S-4074. Mintage: 5,500. A type which generally needs little introduction, the Proof-only 5 Pounds from George VI's coronation set general comes as a fairly unremarkable issue--over 800 examples have been certified between NGC and PCGS combined. Yet when the numbers are analyzed further, the outlier status of this specimen becomes increasingly apparent, with just over 200 receiving either an Ultra or Deep Cameo designation, 31 of those grading PR66, and just 5 ranking only a point finer. An issue which almost as a rule comes with wisps in the fields, most frequently from cabinet rub, the expanses seen here are nearly blemish-free mirrors. Among the finest we have offered, with the last in this grade achieving $28,800 in our January 2019 NYINC sale.
