Coveted Choice Proof George IV 5 Pounds

George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM702, S-3797, L&S-27, Marsh-F6, W&R-213 (R3). Lettered edge. By William Wyon after Chantrey, reverse by Jean-Baptiste Merlen. Mintage: 150. One of many testaments to William Wyon's abilities, and certainly one of his earlier works in a long, illustrious career with the British Royal Mint, this 1826 5 Pounds was designed for inclusion in the monarch's mid-reign Proof Set. Clear attention to detail and skillful mastery of engraving, characteristics typically encountered in the young Wyon's works, complements George IV's portrait on Britain's first modern 5 Pounds, projecting the full, frosted effigy towards the viewer, rendering it an instantly recognizable type and the only collectible date from this ruler. Clearly the product of previous placement in an advanced cabinet, the current representative carries a uniform warm, golden resplendence across bold and carefully struck devices. The reverse of this monumental survivor remains impressively well-preserved, facing up surprisingly finer than the assigned grade would indicate, bathed in die polish and full reflectivity one expects from an "Ultra Cameo" designation. While a scattering of grade-defining wisps decorate the advanced surfaces, this remains an unmissable opportunity for collectors of the British series.
