1891 Liberty Nickel, PR67+ Deep Cameo
None Finer Graded of the Issue at PCGS

1891 5C PR67+ Deep Cameo PCGS. Even though a goodly number of Liberty nickel proofs were struck in 1891 -- some 2,350 pieces -- most of them today will achieve no better than a PR66 grade, and seldom do they appear with the Deep Cameo certification. And despite the date, a quick perusal of the PCGS populations will reveal that for the entire With CENTS type, only 23 grading events for all dates combined are at the PR67 Deep Cameo level (and eight in PR67+ Deep Cameo). Only two are finer for the type, both PR68 Deep Cameo. Specifically for the 1891 date, this piece is one of only two in PR67+ Deep Cameo and none are finer, making this a Registry Set essential (9/20). The white-on-black contrast is profound as the coin is rotated under light, and there is but a hint of gold toning in the central obverse.(Registry values: P3)
