Description

1969-S Lincoln Cent, AU55
Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101

1969-S 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, AU55 PCGS. CAC. This popular Guide Book and Cherrypickers' variety was discovered in mid-1970 and is one of the most dramatic and arguably the rarest variety in the entire series. Strong doubling is obvious on all obverse lettering and the date. The 1969-S Doubled Die is listed number one among the 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins, where Scott Schecter and Jeff Garrett note:

" ... the overall rarity and mystique of this coin give the king of the Lincoln cent varieties a comfortable seat among the greatest modern U.S. coins."

The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen, with only light wear on the well-detailed design elements and lightly abraded steel-brown surfaces. The overall presentation is quite attractive and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population: 9 in 55, 24 finer. CAC: 2 in 55, 13 finer (6/22).
