Description

Rare Gold Prova Anniversary Commemorative 100 Lire

Vittorio Emanuele III gold Matte Proof Prova "Fascist Anniversary" 100 Lire 1923-R PR63 NGC, Rome mint, KM-Pr32, Mont-11 (R3), Gig-P3 (R3), Pag-158 (R3), Struck to commemorate the first anniversary of the newly formed Fascist government in Italy. A rarely encountered commemorative Prova bearing a design that is essentially identical to the circulation (business strike) issue of the same date, with the addition of the word "PROVA" in small letting beneath the reverse denomination. Provas of this date are meaningfully more difficult to acquire than their circulation issue counterpart 100 Lires and commensurately higher valued. We note that NGC has certified only 5 examples in total, of which this offering ranks alongside two others in a tied position for the second-finest certified to date, with only a single "64" grading finer. A gracious layer of mint frost yields the characteristic matte finish for the type, against which only isolated instances of contact and superficial friction are noted. A clear contender for any high-end collection of Italian gold or Provas, and an offering that is likely to be met with spirited bidding interest.
