Description

1796 Half Cent, VG8
C-2, Key Date With Pole Variety

1796 1/2 C With Pole, C-2, B-2, High R.4, VG8 PCGS. Steel-copper color is highlighted with hints of sunrise-yellow and sage-green. The planchet is clean, with dents at AM and I in AMERICA the only abrasions worth mentioning, but even they are not particularly noticeable. Wear is even. This wonderful example is also stored in a Generation 3.1 green label holder.

The 1796 half cent is the key date in the series, and is separated into two die marriages: the With Pole (C-2) and No Pole (C-1). Manley lists a single die state for each die marriage, with no deterioration evident on their shared reverse, making sequence by die state impossible. Cohen listed the latter first, although Eckberg flipped this order to better account for the half cent deliveries of 1796. He suggests that in addition to the 1,390 coins delivered on October 14, the figure typically given as the mintage for 1796 half cents, the 3,350 delivered on April 19 and 1,740 on June 8 also comprised coins of this date. Given the scarcity of the No Pole variety due to its massive die break, he proposes that this die marriage comprised the October 14 delivery and the two earlier deliveries were entirely With Pole examples. Regardless, this is still the key date of the half cent series, and given its smooth surfaces, would be the centerpiece of any half cent collection.
