1842-O Quarter, AU55
The Elusive Small Date Variant
1842-O 25C Small Date AU55 NGC. Toned gunmetal and deep
lilac-gray, this 1842-O Small Date quarter is an exceptional
representative of the rarest New Orleans issue in the Seated
Liberty quarter series. Small Date quarters are usually seen
well-worn and seldom exceed the VF grade. They are formidable
rarities at the XF and AU grades. This Choice About Uncirculated
O-mint coin retains sharp definition for the grade, with remarkably
unabraded fields and motifs. Only mild weakness is seen at
Liberty's head and a few stars, while the reverse strike could
hardly be sharper on a circulated coin. A shallow indent at the rim
above star 11 is a thin planchet clip (also seen on the reverse).
Seated quarter enthusiasts will have a hard time improving on this
