Description

1914-D Lincoln Cent, MS66+ Red
Stunning Top-Grade Registry Coin

1914-D 1C MS66+ Red PCGS. We have long written about how much rarer the 1914-D cent is in high Red grades than the 1909-S VDB, and that is no more proven out than by the present coin, an MS66+ Red 1914-D. PCGS has certified 285 examples of the S-VDB in MS66 Red and another 33 in MS66+ Red. But for the 1914-D, PCGS reports eight MS66 Reds and two MS66+ Reds (12/25). Additionally, the service reports 18 Red S-VDB cents finer than this, but not one 1914-D finer.

As NGC has not certified any MS66+ Red coins, the present piece is tied with one other for finest known. We previously handled the other MS66+ Red PCGS coin, nearly a decade ago, but have not seen it since, as it is housed in the Hansen Registry Set.

Rich, original copper-orange luster exhibits luminous satin fields on this unabraded piece, and the strike is bold throughout each side. The obverse die state is earlier than on the reverse. The obverse has smooth fields and crisp detail, while the shows some die fatigue in the fields and associated softness on the wheat ears. The O in ONE is full defined, seemingly in contrast to the border softness caused by die wear. No major spots appear, although with a loupe one can see a few scattered pepper specks that will serve as pedigree markers.

As mentioned, the other MS66+ Red coin resides in the Hansen Registry Set, but none of the other top five PCGS Basic Registry Sets contains a 1914-D in MS66 Red. The current coin is an essential acquisition for any collector wanting to test the ceiling of their Registry Set ranking. PCGS Population: 10 in 66 (2 in 66+), 0 finer (11/25).
