Description

1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar, MS67
Sole Finest at PCGS

1861 50C MS67 PCGS. WB-101, Die Pair Unlisted. With a mintage approaching 2.9 million pieces, at least 24 die pairs are known for the 1861 Philadelphia half dollar issue. It is almost inevitable that additional varieties await discovery. An interesting network of faint die cracks exist on both sides of this exceptional Superb Gem 1861 half dollar. The high grade and needle-sharp strike offer a fertile landscape for variety specialists. Incredibly preserved, the obverse is draped in mottled shades of reddish-gold and gunmetal-blue about the border, while the reverse shows a less-pronounced peripheral medley of golden-russet and blue colors. The central elements emit frosted silver luster on both sides. The motifs are razor-sharp and the few insignificant, well-scattered pinpoint marks are hardly noticeable. Even though extensive quantities of this issue were struck at the dawn of the Civil War, only three Superb Gems appear to have survived. This coin is the sole PCGS representative of that high grade.
