Description

1925-S Buffalo Nickel, MS65+
Near the Condition Census

1925-S 5C MS65+ PCGS. The 1925-S Buffalo nickel is notoriously weakly struck due to excessive die erosion. The typical piece is heavily flowlined with soft details overall regardless of how bold the die impression was. This was normal for many branch mint issues of the 1920s, while Philadelphia coinage enjoyed more frequent working die replacement.

The current Plus-graded Gem is typical in terms of the die erosion on each side, although the crispness of the reverse is above average for the issue. The coin also lacks obvious clash marks, which adds to its appeal. Blended multicolor toning over each side complements the satiny mint luster. This is only the fourth appearance of an MS65+ 1925-S in our auctions. Only a handful of finer pieces are known, and we have not handled one since 2012. Population: 87 in 65 (8 in 65+), 2 finer (6/25).(Registry values: N7079)
