Description

(1785) Bar Copper, AU55
Popular Original Issue, W-8520

(1785) COPPER Bar Copper AU55 PCGS. Breen-1145, W-8520, R.4. Die alignment 165°. A Choice AU example of this scarce and celebrated copper. Rich red-brown coloration tones to darker brown near the letters and bars. The surfaces are largely smooth, with a smattering of light and undistracting marks as expected at this grade level. Like most examples of Bar coppers, it is struck very slightly off-center, with incomplete dentilation on both sides. Unlike most examples, it is problem-free.

The design of these intriguing pieces was based on buttons used on certain Continental Army uniforms. New Jersey newspapers reported their appearance in November 1785. The die alignment of this example is unusual in that most specimens seen appear to have a nearly "medal turn" orientation of 345°; this has the exact opposite orientation, being nearly but not quite "coin turn" at 165° (assuming that the bar with the spur on it is rightly considered the twelfth bar or second from the bottom). Listed on page 76 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 17 in 55, 27 finer (11/17).
