Description

1797 JR-1 Dime, Toned AU53
16 Stars Obverse, Pointed 9, Early Die State
CAC Endorsement

1797 10C 16 Stars, JR-1, R.4, AU53 NGC. CAC. Bluish-gray and reddish-gold toning lightens to old-silver centers on this nicely patinated early dime. A star tip touching the upper-right serif of Y in LIBERTY immediately identifies the 16 Stars JR-1 variety. Only two die pairs produced a reported 25,261-piece 1797 dime mintage, although that number may include some 1796-dated dimes. The other die pair -- JR-2 -- has 13 stars. The Pointed 9 in the date serves as the other distinguishing JR-1 feature, since JR-2 has a Knobbed 9. This example displays an early die state despite the bold die crack that runs from star 1 across the base of Liberty's portrait to the edge below star 16. Light abrasions include some faint old pinscratches in the fields, yet this coin is sharply struck for the assigned About Uncirculated grade. CAC endorsement confirms both the technical grade and the strong eye appeal. NGC Census: 2 in 53, 9 finer. CAC: 1 in 53, 6 finer (11/25).
